HOMER ROPE TOW
For over 70 years the Kachemak Ski Club has been introducing children and adults of all ages in the Homer area to downhill skiing and snowboarding through instructional programs based at the Homer Rope Tow. Located 10 miles from downtown Homer, the Rope Tow has been based at a site owned and maintained by the Club just off Mile 2.5 Ohlson Mountain Road since the 1970’s.
We have 20 acres of terrain accessible from the 850′ tow with 260′ of vertical. The lower slope is perfect for beginners while the steeper upper slope and gullies offer fun to more advanced skiers and boarders. The woodstove-heated warming lodge is located about a 400 yard walk from the parking lot on Ohlson Mountain Road and features picnic tables, an outdoor deck and an outhouse.
PLEASE VOLUNTEER
Homer Rope Tow is operated solely by volunteer effort. We always appreciate any form of volunteer help we are offered – in the summer and fall we often have work parties to clear trails, maintain equipment and keep our buildings up.
Volunteer ski and snowboard instructors are at the core of the educational mission of our organization. Each year KSC sends two Homer High School seniors to Alyeska Resort for lessons on skiing and snowboarding instruction. They form the nucleus of an instructional program for beginners that kicks off during our ski season in February. Adult volunteers from our Board with extensive skiing and snowboarding experience augment this effort, as well as community volunteers with PSIA instruction certification.
Once ski season starts we benefit from having 4-6 volunteers each Sunday to take shifts operating the tow and signing riders in. All our volunteers are required to have First Aid/CPR and Kachemak Ski Club will pay for new volunteers to be certified.
